TECHNICAL PROGRESS IN TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS OF COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

February 15, 2021

The transmission system is in charge of managing the engine power correctly in order to reach the optimal balance between the revolutions and torque that the wheel must have in each driving situation.

In commercial vehicles, the driving sceneries can be quite diverse and demanding, from going up a steep slope at maximum load (with low speed and high torque) to driving on flat ground without trailer to be on time for the next delivery (high speed and low torque requirement). Adapting the vehicle power to these situations is the objective of the transmission system.

Traditional transmission systems were manually and most of their components were mechanical. Nowadays, most new vehicles include automated gearboxes with electronic control. The motivation for this evolution has mainly been the search of greater efficiency, higher speed when shifting gears and less clutch waste.

The technological process of peripheral components in transmission systems has been vital to achieve these goals. Components as the clutch servo or the range shift valves has gone from being purely mechanical elements to products that incorporate solenoids and electronic sensors. Thanks to them, modern transmission systems guarantee greater safety and comfort during the driving.

In Cojali, our Engineering Department is charge of developing and manufacturing the most demanding and innovative components for any transmission system in commercial vehicles.
